Stand Tall: 50 Years of Colchester Zoo

If you go down to Colchester today (and until the end of August, in fact), you’re sure of a brilliant surprise…  Colchester’s been taken over by a herd of giraffes – 30 large sculptures decorated by artists and another 82 little ones decorated by local schools, and all sponsored by local businesses, have been spread far and wide around the town centre, shops, and even nearby towns to celebrate the 50th birthday of Colchester Zoo (which is still the best zoo I’ve ever visited).

There’s an app you can download if you want to ‘collect’ all of them – I’ve found 10 large sculptures and a few little ones too – and as you scan the QR codes, little rewards pop up!  I’m looking forward to my free Costa coffee and soon a little Ty Giraffe cuddly toy from Williams and Griffin.  I really love the idea of these giraffes; they really brighten up the town, it’s so much fun seeing people – families but plenty of grown-ups too – going around the trail, like a treasure hunt, and having their photos taken with them!

Here’s my Stand Tall flickr set – you can see which new sculptures I find as I go.

I’ve got a paper copy of the Stand Tall Trail, which I picked up in the Tourist Information office and I’m looking forward to spending a weekend soon seeing if we can find every single giraffe – are you coming too?

There’s loads more information on the website too.
